István Bányász earned his physics degree from Eötvös Loránd University in 1983. He defended his doctoral dissertation in 1987, also at ELTE. He received the degree candidate of physical sciences at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1994. He worked as a scientific researcher and lecturer at the Microelectronics Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Physics Institute of the Budapest Technical University, the Isotope Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Solid State Physics and Optics Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He is currently a senior research fellow at the HUN-REN Wigner Research Center for Physics and an associate professor at the Institute of Physics and Electrical Engineering of the University of Miskolc. Major stays abroad as visiting researchers and lecturer: École de Chimie de l'Université de Haute-Alsace, Mulhouse, France, invited professor, Universidad de Alicante, Alicante, Spain, invited professor. Previous and current main research areas: Theory and practice of high-resolution holography, design and fabrication of holographic recording materials, optical elements and devices using macro- and micro ion beams.
