History of the Institute of Physics and Electrical Engineering:
We returned to our roots, as in 1904 the institution operated in Selmecbánya (today Banská Štiavnica in Slovakia) under the name of the Department of Physics - Electrical Engineering. From 1 November 2019, we continued our educational and research work under the name of the Institute of Physics and Electrical Engineering (IPEE). There are two departments within the institute: Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DEEE) and Department of Physics (DP).
Brief history of the Department of Physics:
The defining personality of the first half of the 70-year history of the Department/Institute of Physics was Dr. János Szabó, who was its head for a total of 16 years during three periods from 1961. He was responsible for the starting and leading of the first significant scientific topic of the department, which was theoretical research related to magnetohydrodynamic flows. In the 1980s, the activities of Dr. László Szótér as head of the department were lasting and dominant. During his tenure, two nuclear physics research laboratories and a laser physics laboratory, serving primarily educational purposes, were established. From the following period (Dr. Zoltán Demendy, 1996-2004), computer technology developments and the creation of the student computer technology lab can be highlighted. In the last 15 years (Dr. Béla Paripás, 2004-2019), a complete architectural renovation has taken place, and a new fully equipped experimental demonstration room has been created. In the scientific field, the creation and development of the coincidence equipment of the electron spectrometry laboratory and the laser interferometric equipment of the laser laboratory, as well as the establishment of new international relationships, can be highlighted. By the end of the period, the number of our teachers (after the severe declines of the previous decades) stabilized and their average age became lower.
Brief history of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering:
The roots of the institute date back to Selmecbánya (today Banská Štiavnica in Slovakia), where it was founded in 1904 as the Department of Physics and Electrical Engineering. After World War I, the department moved to Sopron. The department was separated into the Physics and the Electrical Engineering departments in Sopron in 1947. In 1959, the Department of Electrical Engineering merged with the Department of Electrical Engineering which was founded in 1950 at the Technical University of Heavy Industry in Miskolc. In the 1970s and 1980s, teaching and research expanded towards electronics, microelectronics and measurement technology. This change was also reflected in the name of the department, and the Department of Electrical-Electronics Engineering was established. In 1989, the department joined the Institute of Informatics founded at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Miskolc, and then in 1998, due to the significant strengthening of IT and electrical education, it founded the Institute of Electrical Engineering, together with the Department of Automation. Directors of the Institute: 1998-99 Prof. Dr. hc. Dr. Tivadar Szarka, 1999-2006 Prof. Dr. habil. István Ajtonyi. The department worked independently between 2007 and 2013, and then on 1 November 2013, the Institute of Electrical Engineering was re-established with two founding departments. The first director of the institute was Dr. Ernő Kovács, and then from 2014 Dr. László Czap took over the leadership. It became an independent institute from 1 September 2016. It once again operates as an institute department from 1 November 2019.
