Department of Descriptive Geometry

The Department of Descriptive Geometry at the University of Miskolc was founded in 1949, simultaneously with the establishment of the Technical University of Heavy Industry. The department is one of the successors of the Department of Descriptive Geometry and Architecture, which was founded in Selmecbánya in 1839. From its establishment until 2013, it operated as an independent department; since then, it has been part of the Institute of Mathematics. The department initially operated in the Földes Ferenc High School, later moved to a dormitory within the University Town, and in 1965, it relocated to its current location in Building A4.

Department of Applied Mathematics

The Department of Applied Mathematics is one of three mathematics departments at the University of Miskolc that constitute the Institute of Mathematics and are responsible for the teaching of mathematics and its applications. The Department of Applied Mathematics was first established
as the Department of Computer Science in 1975 by Prof. Endre Vincze, who served as head of department until 1978. Succeeding heads of department were Zoltán Fónyad (1978), Antal Nikodémusz (1978-1980), Emil Klafszky (1980-1989), Ferenc Kálovics (1989-1990), Aurél Galántai (1990-2003), Sándor Fegyverneki (2003-2022), Attila Házy (2022-2024) and Attila Körei (2024-).

The department has a 40-year tradition of carrying out research of world-class excellence in a broad range of subjects across applied mathematics and computer science. Department members have made seminal theoretical advances in the development of mathematical techniques and in the application of mathematics combined with engineering to many different areas of science.

Department of Analysis

The Department of Analysis continues the activity of the former Department of Mathematics, founded in 1949. The chairs of the Department were: Samu Borbély (1949-1955), Gyula Gáspár (1955-1974), Zoltán Szarka (1974-1978), Endre Vincze (1978-1988), Zoltán Szarka (1988-1991), Ferenc Kálovics (1991-1997), Miklós Rontó (1997-2008) and Jenő Szigeti (2008-2019), Csaba Rakaczki (2019-).
